Common
Minor Disorders and Complaints in Pregnancy
Nausea
and vomiting (cont.)
It
is also associated with human chorionic gonadotrophin, and is more common
in conditions where there is a larger trophoblastic tissue mass such
as multiple pregnancy, diabetic pregnancy, and molar pregnancy. There
are varying grades of severity and the most severe form (Hyperemesis
Gravidarum) is associated with fluid and electrolyte disturbance and
in progressive cases, with weight loss > 5% of initial body weight.
Headache
Some women suffer more headaches or migraines than usual in pregnancy.
Simple painkillers such as paracetamol or aspirin, in combination with
rest and lots of water, will help. If the headaches are unusual or persistent
you should contact your doctor.
Heartburn
Progesterone, the pregnancy hormone, not only relaxes the uterus (womb)
in pregnancy, but also other smooth muscle e.g. in the gut. When combined
with the pressure of the growing uterus, heartburn (acid regurgitation)
is very common. It can be treated with simple antacids such as Rennie,
Settlers etc. If the problem persists consult your doctor.
