Common
Minor Disorders and Complaints in Pregnancy
Pigmentation
(cont.)
It
usually subsides following delivery. Other pigmentary changes occur
which are not restricted to the head and neck, but disappear after pregnancy.
There may be some physiological enlargement of the thyroid gland with
a corresponding increase in blood flow, but treatment is not required
and complete resolution is usual.
Dental
problems
Dental problems are common during pregnancy. Many pregnant women find
their gums bleed easily while brushing their teeth. There is an increased
sensitivity to dental plaque, a problem that is minimised by careful
brushing twice a day. Women are also advised to avoid food with a high
sugar content. Other problems such as fibrous epulis may also be seen
more commonly at this time, while coincidental gum or gingival disease
requires immediate attention. In some countries, dental care is free
during pregnancy and some months after birth.
Breast
Pain
Breast pain (mastodynia) is occasionally an early symptom of pregnancy.
A less uncomfortable tingling sensation is more usually seen, and resolves
spontaneously.
